Too often, transportation planning and decision making is done without good input from those most affected boarding-busby new projects. The Baltimore Region Environmental Justice in Transportation Project (BREJTP) is an effort to correct this imbalance by encouraging the use of an environmental justice (EJ) framework in regional transportation planning. Ultimately, we hope to unite Baltimore citizens around improving transportation planning in low-income and/or vulnerable communities nationwide.

Our work in Baltimore has three phases:

Community Outreach: First, we plan to identify particularly vulnerable groups troughout the region and determine the key Environmental Justice in Transportation (EJT) issues affecting them.

EJT Tool Kit: BREJTP will then develop a planning guide/tool kit to support interactions between transportation agencies and members of these impacted communities. We are concerned with the following transportation issues, which will be addressed in the kit:

  • Access to Quality Transit Service
  • Pedestrian Safety
  • Air Pollution and Congestion

Scaling Up: Building on our success in the Baltimore region, we hope to encourage others to adopt best practices through peer exchange and academic publication.

Please check back frequently for more information on the status of our work. This a work in progress, so please excuse our dust as we continue to develop
